Degree Requirements
A total of 54 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree is required. 24 credit hours are core courses; 3 credit hours are assigned to the Culminating Project OR 6 credit hours are assigned to the Thesis; 6 credit hours are Art Education electives, 3-6 are other electives, the remaining 18 credit hours are devoted to study in one or more areas of art study and to electives in Art Education. The program is normally completed in two academic years or six quarters, although it is possible to complete the program in one academic year and an additional summer quarter.
Typically, students pursuing the Master of Arts degree in Art Education are already certified to teach grades K-12. However, students desiring certification may take an expanded program. Although general requirements vary with students' backgrounds, usually 29 additional credits are mandatory for certification, 17 of which may be earned within the 27 credit hours designated above. In addition to the above degree requirements, students must fulfill the following:
- After 12 credit hours have been completed, all students must successfully pass a faculty committee review of their progress, grades, and possible topics for the Culminating Project or Thesis before advancement to degree candidacy.
- Successful completion of a Culminating Project or Thesis, submitted to the faculty advisor and approved by the Art Education faculty.
