Foundations

Digital Foundations I
A three-quarter sequence of two credit courses that will focus on the theoretical and practical application of computers while building general skills and exposing the student to a wide array of software. The course will progress from general computing concepts to 2-D graphical representation then culminating in a 3-D animation and video production. Students will learn general concepts during a lecture portion of the class then apply these concepts utilizing specific software in a lab component of the class.

Methods and Concepts I
Basic principles for visual communication with an emphasis on visual perception as it relates to art. Introduction to 2D and 3D materials.

Methods and Concepts II
Basic principles of color, covering theory and application.

Methods and Concepts III
Methods and Concepts III introduces diverse functions and meanings of art and design, with an emphasis on basic compositional principles.

Drawing

Basic Drawing I
An intensive drawing course. Basic problems in the observation and interpretation of form with concern for space, line, volume, shape, and composition. Varied subject matter and media.

Basic Drawing II
Continuation of Basic Drawing I. Basic problems in the observation and interpretation of form, with the added study of basic color principles. Varied subject matter and media.

Basic Drawing III
Basic Drawing III is a continuation of Basic Drawing II. Learning to draw is primarily about learning to see with greater clarity. It can be a meditative activity, slowing, deepening the pace of how we view the world. Drawing is also the foundation of most visual art fields, and is a powerful form of communication in and of itself. This course is sequenced in three-levels. Basic Drawing III explores non-traditional materials and stylized spatial strategies, building on the principles and practices learned in Basic Drawing and Methods/Concepts from previous quarters.

Life Drawing I
Intensive study of human anatomy. The human figure as a vehicle for drawn images.

Life Drawing II
Continuing study of the human anatomy. The human figure as a vehicle for drawn images.

Life Drawing III
Life Drawing is an upper-level course designed to explore the visual and psychological characteristics stimulated by the investigation and analyzation of the interactive, ongoing, balanced emphasis between traditional modes of representation and contemporary alternatives and solutions that reflect your individual artistic sensibilities.

Intermediate Drawing
Intermediate Drawing is designed to be a conceptual and transitional bridge between basic and advanced drawing. This course is structured to encourage the highest level of self-motivated initiative to enhance the student's ability to successfully develop individual strategies that effectively reflect the maturation of individual artistic vision and aesthetic temperament.

Advanced Drawing
Advanced Drawing is designed to encourage the continued investigation and exploration of concepts and methods applicable to individual artistic development and maturation.

Painting

Introductory Painting
Introductory Painting is an intensive one-quarter introduction to painting. This course is for third quarter intro students only. It is for those students who are self-directed and self-disciplined enough to develop their own concepts and direction. It is especially designed to allow those more advanced students a freedom to design their quarter's experience in painting and prepare them for advanced work.

Advanced Painting
Adavanced Painting is designed to encourage the continued investigation and exploration of concepts and methods applicable to your artistic development and maturation.

Life Painting
Life Painting is designed to encourage advanced problem solving and individual work in oil paint using the human form as a reference.

Photography

Introductory Photography
Introductory Photography is designed to familiarize students with the equipment, materials and film related to Photographic work. Students gain an understanding of picture components, both graphic and aesthetic. They also learn about the private and public uses of pictures in our culture and how to look at and talk about them. A digital single lens reflex camera with manual control capability is a requirement for Introduction to Photography starting in Spring Quarter 2009.

Intermediate Photography
Exploration of large format cameras, fine printing processes and related traditional photographic practices.

Intermediate Photography II
Exploration of traditional color photographic technologies.

Digital Still Photography
This course is an exploration of digital still photography in relation to PhotoShop, image capture, color management and digital output possibilities.

Advanced Photography
Advanced Photography is an exercise into a scholarly approach in investigation of the photographic meidum. Students learn to better articulate their own and others' ideas based on investigation and how to to achieve a professional level of conduct and performance.

Sculpture

Introductory Sculpture
This course provides an introduction to Sculpture as a three-dimensional medium of expression. It introduces basic principles of sculpture and expands personal definitions and interpretations of contemporary three-dimensional art. It familiarizes students with tools materials and techniques. Concepts of form, space/time, scale, movement, surface and function are explored.

Advanced Sculpture
Adavnced Sculpture is an in-depth studio course based on the exploration and the creation of sculpture form for students with prior experience in sculpture.

Figure Modeling
This course explores modeling of the human form for sculpture based on observation.

Sculpture Foundry
A course in the basic techniques of casting art objects in aluminum or bronze.

Electronic Art

Intro Animation Art

Ceramics

Introductory Ceramics: Handbuilding
This course is an introduction of basic properties and techniques of clay. The goals for the course are the understanding of basic handbuilding techniques, general shop and safety procedures, learning to be both sensitive and expressive with sculptural form, and learning to develop an idea and translate that idea into sculpture with enough technical expertise to see the piece through to completion.

Advanced Ceramics
Advanced Ceramics explores handbuilding, glaze calculation and firing techniques. with an increased emphasis on conceptualization.

Printmaking

Introductory Litho Printmaking
Introduction to the art and technique of hand lithography in a variety of media on stones and metal plates.

Introductory Intaglio Printmaking
Introductory Intaglio Printmaking is a beginning course in etching, engraving and drypoint on metal plates. Students make prints using a variety of techniques and procedures which will build in complexity throughout the course. Course focus will revolve around the idea of intaglio process as a means of personal expression.

Advanced Printmaking
Advanced Printmaking is an upper-level studio course where students are encouraged to develop individual concepts in one or more of a variety of traditional printmaking techniques. Students will explore how technique interacts with individually developed concepts of art and different ways of making images. Students will be exposed to historical and contemporary examples of print media and develop the ability to think critically, observe, and talk about images and prints in a formal and analytical way.

Special Topics

Current Arts Forum
Current Arts Forum is a discussion and analysis of artists' work and ideas to assist in understanding the nature of art and art making.

Senior Thesis Colloquy
This course is a review and study of contemporary artistic theory combined with intense analysis of student's creative research, resulting in original thesis statement. Restricted to seniors in Fine Arts who, during the academic year the course is taken, are planning to participate in DAAPWorks.

Installation Art
This course provides students with an interdisciplinary experience that enables them to explore concepts of site-specific, non-traditional and multimedia art. It provides an introduction to the practice of Installation Art, allowing students to experiment with constructing space while investigating issues of scale, repetition, color, line and content within a defined physical space using a variety of media.

Studio Research Assistantship
Students will conduct research for Fine Arts faculty who are working on specific, substantial studio art research projects. Students will gain indepth knowledge about the work that goes into a long term project, the business aspects of being a working artist, exhibition preparation, and marketing and promotion of art work.

Professional Internship
This course provides constructive learning experiences in support of the visual arts through supervised activity within the studio of a professional art-related organization such as a gallery, museum, studio, or production facility. If working with a professional artist, students will have the opportunity to gain in depth knowledge about the work that goes into a long term project, the business aspects of being a working artist, exhibition preparation, and marketing and promotion of art work. If working for an organization, students will gain experience in practices and requirements and how they interface either with other departments or with other businesses. The student will gain an understanding of day to day operations and the interactions of colleagues within the organization.

Gallery Internship
Gallery Internship consists of supervised work in professional gallery. Students work 9 hours each week to assist in gallery preparation, installation, lighting, packing, openings, etc.
