About the Program
The Art History Master's program offers courses in Western, and Asian art. The degree consists of two years of intensive study directed toward preparing students for either continued graduate study in Art History or professional employment. With a very active, nurturing faculty, the UC program is especially suited for those students desiring close personal attention from scholars in the field.
The curriculum prepares students for further advanced study, especially for the Ph.D. in Art History, for the Master of Library Science (MLS), or for securing employment in art-related institutions, such as museums, galleries, and auction houses. For those interested in a museum career, there are internships open to students at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Taft Museum of Art, the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (CAC), as well as numerous galleries in the area. Students also have the option of earning a Museum Studies Graduate Certificate by taking an internship and four seminars; this involves just four credits more than the M.A. degree.

The program sponsors the Art History guest lecture series, in tandem with the School of Art Visiting Artists and Scholars series, which features well-known art historians and museum professionals with local, regional, and national reputations. Recent speakers in the School of Art Series have been Pamela Thomas (2008), Julia Andrews (2007), Kymberly Pinder (2007), Toby Kamps (2006), Linda Shearer (2006), Wouter Davidts (2006) and Stephanie Dickey (2006).
Among the special distinctions of the program is Art Words, a journal produced by graduate students. They publish scholarly articles, interviews, and reviews of books and exhibitions, and they serve as editor, art director, production manager, and chief financial officer.
