Degree Requirements

Each student must complete 60 quarter credit hours of work, at least 48 of which are course credits and up to 12 of which may be in thesis credits. The course work must include at least 24 quarter credit hours in seminars and 800-level courses.

There are three required courses:

  1. Research Seminar Taken the fall of the first year.
  2. Thesis Colloquium and Professional Practices Seminar Taken the fall of the second year.
  3. Historiography Taken when available; offered every other winter.

Other Requirements

  • demonstration of proficiency in French, German, or Italian (or a language relevant to the thesis, approved via special appeal to the Director of Graduate Studies) during the first year through a passing grade in a departmental exam, passing grade in the Educational Service Examination, or completion of a sequences of language reading courses
  • pass a qualifying written examination in Art History during second year
  • a 40-80 page thesis
