Unique Planning

Uniqueness of the School of Planning Within DAAP

  • Only PhD program (Regional Development Planning) in DAAP
  • 186 undergraduates (151 BUP; 35 BSUS); 103 MCP (degree offered 5 ways); 12 PhD; smallest school in DAAP
  • 16 faculty lines plus 16 adjuncts, smallest faculty in DAAP
  • In addition to the 151 students in the co-op BUP program, all MCP students must do a paid internship between the first and second years of the program
  • All students, undergraduate and graduate, complete a thesis
  • 48 of 75 full-time MCP students have assistantship on campus or academic year professional internships
  • All 12 PhD students are funded, but only 5 by the Graduate School
  • Traditionally the highest minority enrollment within DAAP

Uniqueness of the School of Planning Among Academic Planning Units Nationwide

  • One of the largest planning units in the country
  • One of only four units nationwide with co-op (the others being Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona and Ball State); UC co-op is by far the most extensive
  • The BUP in SOP considered the leading undergraduate program nationwide
  • One of only three universities in the country (along with Illinois and Arizona State) to have accredited undergraduate and graduate professional degrees and a PhD; the only one of them with co-op
  • The MCP program has been ranked 4th in Midwest and 18th nationwide by The Planetizen 2007 Guide to Graduate Urban Planning programs in the United States and Canada. Planetizen is the leading website for the urban planning community.
  • One of only four planning units nationwide with the Peace Corps Masters International Program (the others are Florida State, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech) and one of only three with the Peace Corps Fellows Program (along with Arizona and New Orleans); only program in any field of study in Ohio with either Peace Corps program, and SOP has both

International Activities

  • Most international school in DAAP and among the most global on the UC campus
  • All professors have worked abroad
  • Tenure track faculty from 7 countries
  • 7 faculty members have been Fulbright scholars
  • 2 have been Peace Corps Volunteers; one held a Watson Fellowship
  • 34% of MCP students are international
  • 80% of PhD students are international
  • Exchange programs at the undergraduate level with the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Istanbul Technical University (Turkey) for 3-5 students per year
  • Exchange programs at the graduate level with the Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands) and St. Lucas School of Science and Art (Belgium) for 3 students per year; Istanbul Technical University for 1-4 students per year
  • Summer quarter in Greece working on projects for a municipality; program both for undergraduate students (12 credits and co-op waiver) and MCP students (summer internship); 12-25 students per year
  • Summer three week studio in Sardinia, Italy with Italian students
  • Fall two week studio and study visit to Brazil
  • Two Peace Corps Programs (Masters International Program and Peace Corps Fellows Program); 14 participants; 11 returned volunteers; two now serving abroad
