Program Overview

Project Theme and Purpose

This four-day workshop will focus on the Avondale neighborhood of Cincinnati, a predominantly African-American neighborhood and neighbor to the Cincinnati Zoo, the University of Cincinnati, and numerous area hospitals. The neighborhood is experiencing many of the challenges of low-income neighborhoods in Cincinnati, but has a strong neighborhood council which has developed long term plans for the neighborhood’s future.

The workshop has been designed to offer a chance for students to meet together, share their personal and professional experiences, and work together in close conjunction with the Avondale neighborhood in Uptown Cincinnati. The project is part of the ongoing development efforts that are intended to turn the Avondale neighborhood into a more livable community. Workshop teams will focus on developing suggestions for the main street that overlooks Avondale’s central business district, including landscape design, urban design, information design, and planning.

In addition to the opportunity to work closely in US-European teams, the workshop is intended to offer students the opportunity to compare travel experiences, get to know students and faculty from all of the partner schools in the Meta-University exchange, and visit Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati campus.
