World
Town Planning Day was
founded in 1949 to advance public and professional interest in planning and
takes place Nov. 8th. “World Town Planning Day is one day to call attention
to the role of planning in making great communities,” said AICP Executive
Director Paul Farmer. “To help publicize the importance of planning across
the country, APA members and chapters work in their communities, regions and
states to organize special activities and events.”
In recognition of World Town Planning Day, the Cincinnati Section of the Ohio Planning Conference will conduct a public planning event for the Butler County Village of New Miami. This charette will bring students together from the University of Cincinnati and Miami University to work with professional planners and Village leaders to identify potential future improvements for the village of 2,469 residents (2000 U.S. Census). The charette will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 P.M., Friday, November 12 at the Village Hall (268 Whitaker Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio, 45011). New Miami is the first Butler County community to host World Town Planning Day, now in its third year in Southwestern Ohio. New Miami is also the first community to host undergraduate planning students from both the University of Cincinnati and Miami University. Students from both programs will be working on mixed teams, each of which will also have a professional planner and a village leader. “Holding World Town Planning Day in New Miami gives us a chance to bring both sets of students together, which seldom happens,” said Sarah Horn, chair of the World Town Planning Day sub-committee and a physical planner with Cincinnati planning firm Edwards and Kelcey. “Both programs have very different approaches to planning. We think that bringing the two together, under the guidance of professionals and the Village leadership, will give all of us a chance to learn from each other.” The Nov. 12 charrette will
build upon a public visioning session, which was facilitated by professional
planners on October 25, 2004. The UC and Miami students will become
acquainted with New Miami through data, digital mapping and other analysis
before the charette, and will be able to access a wide variety of
information via this project internet site before Nov. 12. Participants:
