Art Education Faculty Member Wins Award from Professional Association
UC's Flavia Bastos just received an award from the United States Society for Education Through Art. She received the organization's Ziegfeld Award in recognition of her contributions to art education.

The organization annually honors one American and one international art educator for outstanding and internationally recognized contribution to art education through exceptional records of achievement in scholarly writing, research, professional service or community service.
Among her many accomplishments that earned her the Ziegfeld Award, Bastos currently leads the world's most prestigious and influential academic/professional journal in her field, the Journal of Art Education. Before becoming editor of that journal, Bastos served as the journal's associate editor.
Said Bastos, "It was an honor to be asked to fill the role of editor. I was happily surprised and just as happily accepted the responsibility... . It's important to me to further and support the impact of art in education at all levels and to fit ideas together in a meaningful way... ."
As editor, Bastos has planned themed issues related to multiculturalism and economic issues affecting art education.
While at DAAP, she has also implemented a summer exchange program that has allowed UC students to study in Brazil. And currently, Bastos is discussing the possibility of a partnership with Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa.
Just as importantly, Bastos has made it a practice to give back to the local community as well as the international community. After first coming to DAAP in 2001, she assumed leadership for was the "Art in the Market" effort which involves local youth in creating public art for the inner-city neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine.
