Fine Arts Alumna Receives Statewide Recognition

DAAP fine arts alumna Margot Gotoff just received statewide recognition for her work as a glass artist and teacher.

University of Cincinnati master's in fine arts alumna Margot Gotoff, a resident of the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, received the 2009 Ohioana Pegasus Award on Oct. 17, 2009, in the Statehouse Atrium in Columbus, Ohio.

Gotoff received her MFA degree in sculpture in 1988 from UC's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. She has since worked in clay, bronze and glass.

She is best known for her larger-than-life glass sculptures, which have been shown in exhibits across the nation and are included in both public and private collections in New York, Palm Beach, Chicago, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Rome. Locally, her work can be seen in the Marta Hewett Gallery.

Gotoff received the 2009 Ohioana Pegasus Award from the Ohioana Library Association, one of the oldest and most prestigious arts and humanities organizations, in recognition of her cultural contributions and achievements. The Ohioana awards are presented in recognition of distinguished service in specific fields of the arts and humanities in order to encourage the creative accomplishments of Ohioans.

Past Pegasus Award recipients include conductor Erich Kunzel, artist and architect Maya Lin, singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, feminist activist, organizer and writer Gloria Steinem, and singer and actress Doris Day.

Gotoff is the only Cincinnatian among the 15 recipients to receive 2009 Ohioana awards on Oct. 17. All recipients were also honored at an evening reception held on Oct. 16, 2009, with Ohio First Lady Frances Strickland.
