Three Distinguished Speakers to Visit DAAP on Nov. 4

Nationally distinguished presenters will lecture at DAAP on Wednesday, Nov. 4. These lectures are free and open to the public.

Three nationally prominent guest lecturers will speak at the University of Cincinnati in one afternoon - Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

All the lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in UC's nationally ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP).

Stephen Apking

  • UC distinguished interior design alumnus Stephen Apking, Interior Design Partner at the internationally recognized firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP, in New York City. Apking has been pivotal in broadening SOM's multidisciplinary design practice with an emphasis on defining innovative concepts and programs for interior architecture. He leads a creative studio that addresses clients' needs holistically, including furniture design, technology integration, branded environments concepts, and curating of artworks and accessories.

Apking will speak at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 4400 (the main auditorium) of DAAP.

  • Brett Terpeluk, principal of Studio Terpeluk in San Francisco, is dedicating his design practice to the production of a highly refined built product integrating sustainable technologies with a craft-based sensibility. The firm's successful projects require rigorous attention to detail at all scales and a healthy interdisciplinary exchange between designer, engineer and craftsperson.

Terpeluk will speak at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 5401 of DAAP.

  • Elliott D. Sclar, director of Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Urban Development, is a professor of planning. An economist and urban planner, Sclar's research interests include urban economic development, transportation and public service economies.

Sclar will speak at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 5401 of DAAP.


A reception is planned during the afternoon, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, outside of DAAP's Dorothy W. and C. Lawson Reed, Jr. Gallery, located on the 5000-level of the college.
